PostSubject: Port M Report...   Port Mansfield - Any recent trips down? EmptyTue Apr 27, 2010 2:09 pm

Made the run to Port M Sat 4/24 and back on Sunday. Both runs were timed with the low tide to take advantage of the harder waterline beach exposure - just have to dodge fisherman with rigs set on the waterline. Each run took about 2 hours in my 4WD Tahoe. Do not attempt without 4WD. The worst part is between mile markers 18 to 25. This area is very, very slow going in very, very soupy conditions. Other spots we were able to open it up to 40 mph. The surf itself was a bit of disappointment on Sat based on conditions to be had back north. The wind did not turn off shore until sometime during the night. Sunday looked crazy good with long offshore green ropes peeling off. About 50% makeable vs. closeout. It was breaking more beach than point like. One interesting note, there was a very intriguing looking right breaking deep up in the middle of the channel, not at the jetty mouth. I suspect a large amount of sand is building again, on a slightly bigger swell it would have real potential plus benefit by taking the wind chop out. Kinda reminded me of the Cove in P.I. - One final thought... mosquitos as big and dense as any Off commercial ever - beware of the dunes...

Mike,

Any thing special about your Tahoe, just out of curiosity. Lift? Tires? etc.

Nothing super special about the Tahoe - it is the LS version, so it has the heavy duty towing package w/ 4WD and the big engine. The wheels are 20 inch but not off-road type. There were probably about 3 or 4 spots between mile markers 18-25 where the clearance was just about maxed out from the berm between the the wore tracks but I was never really worried about "grounding" out. Be sure to take tons of mosquito repellant - never seen anything like it. And I can't be sure, but when I got back home to hill country, I 'found' a 18 inch rattlesnake by my back door, the next day, right next to where I had thrown my surf bag. Soooo, I don't know if he hitched a ride back with us (thinking about rattler roadtriping with me - don't know whether to scream or laugh)... could have just been a coincidence, but my advise, keep your bags and tents zipped and not laying around open at the campsite.

Yikes!!! about the snake dude, I don't screw with snakes or sharks!!!! I was just wondering how equipped one would need to be to get down there. I drive down that way via HWY 77 twice weekly, but no boat to get across the channel leaves me treking down the beach. I have really been wanting to get down there soon, but didn't know if my vehicle could handle it.
