| My big brother and very best friend in life Glenn got popped by what we think was a stingray on Wednesday while surfing by the pier. It left a nice hole in his foot, and yesterday his foot swelled up three times its normal size. Today it had spread to his knee and he had to have surgery at Victoria Citizens to relieve the pressure so he doesn't get compartment's, and is now in the ICU recovering. We're not sure if it is poison from the stingray or bacterial from the water. He is going to hate having to be out of the water for a couple of months, but the main thing is that he is alive and well and that he keeps his leg. So keep your wounds tended and watch out for those sea critters. Please keep him in your prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.
Thanks,
Jc | |

| Very sorry to hear about your brothers run in with a stingray. My best wishes to your brother for a speedy recovery. It's never nice to be laid up and away from your daily routines and the things you like to do, but it sounds temporary. I'm sure he will be back out in the water as soon as he is able and recovered. Just out of curiosity, was he walking out in the water when he got stung? I have heard that the only time a stingray will attack is when they get stepped on, therefore I'm told the best way to walk when you are in the water is to shuffle your feet and not take normal steps. In this way your foot will bump into the stingray and allow it time to swim away instead of stepping on it and getting stung. I don't know if this is fact or fiction but I always try to shuffle along and not take normal steps when I am in the water. | |

| He actually landed on it when he jumped off his board. He is in a room now and out of ICU. Dr. said it looks like the fleasheating bacteria. It is looking better, but he may have to have some more surgery to remove some more dead tissue extending up from the wound. Hopefully this is all that the dead stuff will extend. He is getting pretty bummed about being on bed rest. I told him I wouldn't surf until he could again, but he wouldn't let me do that. Took him his PS3 to keep him entertained at the hospital. Another problem he is facing is missing work when he doesn't have any PTO because he used it all when his daughter was born a couple of months ago. So right now he is bummed and stressed, but relieved he still has two legs. He's a physical therapist so he should be back on his feet in no time. Stay out of the stagnant water sitting in all that nasty seaweed, we think that is where he picked it up. The City of Port Aransas really needs to think about cleaning this up. It is nasty, stinky, and obviously very hazardous. I know it is the free beach and all, but that is one of the best places to paddle out. We pay for a beach permit every year, but still park at the pier 99 percent of the time. Maybe they should make us need a permit to park at the pier so they can have funding to clean this area as well. I don't know, but my brother is pretty pissed as am I about the beach looking literally like crap there the past couple of years. Just stay clear and walk around the puddles and be safe. Hopefully a big tide will come soon to wash it all away. | |

| Vibrio has been popping up since Dolly. Partly due to rain and partly due to the ' flush ' of stagnant water from back lakes. If you have an open wound , make sure you clean it immediatly once out of the water. Bring a little bleach with you to clean a cut as soon as you get out. In rockport we have had some serious cases due to individuals NOT cleaning their wounds after being exposed in the water.
Yes is is safe to go in the water ! Just be extra careful and attend to any cuts right after you get out !

| what do yall recommend most for cleaning cuts. I usually rub anti bacterial soap on it and some hydrogen proxide but is that enough?

| Soap and peroxide should be fine - the key is to get open areas cleaned as soon as you get out of the water. | |

| Glenn is having a faschiotomy of his upper leg today. The swelling is pretty bad and it was really hurting him, so hopefully this will relieve some of his pain and the swelling will stop. They are also going to remove whatever dead tissue they run in to while he is already in surgery. Hoping and praying for the best. | |

| He's doing good, he's in great spirits all things considered. There is not a lot of tissue left on his foot right now. Said he looks like Skeletor down there. They cleaned out a lot of adipose tissue from his thigh that had built up from the swelling and also did a faschiotomy of the outside of his thigh. The doc said that this should be it for the removal surgeries. Hopefully they'll only be doing grafts from here, and hopefully Glenn can keep mobility in that foot. | |

| He'll be in the hospital for a couple weeks most likely. His swelling has gone down a lot and things are starting to look up. Seems this last surgery really helped and should be the last one he needs. He still can not move his foot. It's just probably going to take some therapy. Skin grafts will probably start next week some time. Glenn feels good and a lot of the pain has subsided. Just hoping things stay positive and keep looking up. | |

Thats fantastic ! I take my hat off to anyone that gets hit by a sting ray and shakes it off and then goes back out to finish his session. In retrospect, he probably would have cleaned his wound and called it a day. Regardless. It is great news he is doing better and I am sure he will be back in the water before long. Good LucK Glenn! | Glenn has more surgery today on his lower leg due to more swelling. Still hoping and praying it goes okay. This is going to be more of an exploratory and precautionary measure. Hoping and praying for the best for him.

| There is not a fund at the moment. They are having a benefit barbeque for him at his work in Port Lavaca on September 6. That is all I know of right now. He was in a lot of pain this morning, but the good news is all his swelling has pretty much gone down. The surgery yesterday went very well and hopefully Glenn gets to go home in a week. So far we keep thinking he is going to get sent home, and he ends up going back in to surgery for something. Its just going to be a lengthy and tedious process. He wants me to thank you all for your support and prayers. I'll keep you all updated. | |

| The doctor told Glenn he gets to go home tomorrow. He is stoked about getting out of that room. Going on 3 weeks away from his home and his kids was getting rough on him mentally on top of the physical pain. This will help him quite a bit mentally, but he still has a long road to endure physically. He told me the other day he's been watching Martha Stewart and Rachel Ray and is going to have to take up cooking to hold him over until he can get back in the water. I told him no complaints here 'cause I likes to eat . Anyway, good news, and hoping it stays that way. This is the third time he's been told he's going to go home, just praying it stays that way this time. Thanks again and again for all your prayers and support. We have a really great surfing community here in Texas. I think we're going to have a party for Glenn when he makes it back to the beach and all you guys should be there because I know he wants to see those of you who have supported him through this battle. | |
