Ash,

Drop by Port A Surf Co. Chris can get you hooked up as far what suit, booties , gloves you will need.

Basically we have several good breaks around Port A. Horace Caldwell is a good spot to start. There is a rip right next to the pier so you can utilize it to paddle out. There is a fairly mellow right and a left, to help you get your surf legs back in business. There should be a crew out and most all are cool and the vibe is good.

To the south is a break called fish pass, two small jetties which have enhanced the bars and it can be good. Vibe is good. A little more punch than HCP. The next break south is Packery Channel. Two medium length jetties, again a litlte more punch, it can line up nicely and there is also a rip right next to the jetties that can assist with you paddle. Vibe is good

The next break south is Bob Hall Pier, not exactly a good place for beginner or intermediate surfers. The crew is pretty agressive and the vibe a little tight. It is a great break, perhaps a good place to get some photos and see whats going on before making the paddle.

Have a great trip..

Ben lined you up on all the breaks pretty well. The swell we're going to have will be SSE, which will make St. Joseph's Island northward opposite the far jetty a good option for cleaner waves. There's a little boat/ferry that leaves from... my mind's a blank. It's a bait stand where fishng boats come in--Woody's maybe, facing the jetty. Cost is $10-12 (somebody correct me). It could be worth it if the surf is big and choppy and you've got the extra money. I'm picking up a new board and wetsuit from Chris mid-morning Monday and then probably taking the boat over to St. Joe's. Oh man I sound rich. Ah, the life of a library worker.
